Biography
Matthias F. Melzig is a professor of pharmacology in Federal University for Risk Asessment.
Research Interest
His working group deals with the isolation, chemical characterization and the pharmacological effects of natural products from higher plants. One focus is the investigation of medicinal plants, which have been used for a long time in the pediatrics, but whose biological effects have hitherto been very little known. We also investigate the use of natural products as enzyme inhibitors (including proteases, amylases) as well as the molecular mechanisms of action of selected triterpene derivatives. Our research is focused on isolation, chemical characterization and investigation in pharmacological activities of natural products of higher plants. The emphasis is on the study of the medical profession. We are interested in finding new inhibitor of enzymes (proteases, amylases, lipases and other hydrolases) as well as the mode of action of selected triterpenoid compounds, mainly saponins and triterpenoic acids.
