Biography
Gerhard Schneider was born in 1955 and studied mathematics and physics at the universities of Erlangen (Diploma 1978) and Oxford (1979). He gave his doctorate in Essen in 1981 and habilitated there in 1988. In 1992, he followed a call to the University of Karlsruhe to a professorship for decentralized systems, combined with the deputy management of the data center. In 1997, he took over the management of the GWDG, the joint data center of the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Society. In 2002, he moved to Freiburg, where he became professor for communication systems and was headed by the university decree center. From 2003 to 2008, he was responsible for the areas of communication systems and technology transfer and developed the use of new media at the university. Since 2008 he is CIO of the University. He spent part of his academic career at foreign universities and research institutions such as the University of Sydney, the ETH, Virginia Tech, and the IBM Watson Research Center. He also works in various committees of the DFG, the DFN and the Wissenschaftsrat.
Research Interest
The research focuses on aspects of digital long-term archiving and security in data networks. Recently, the focus has been on privacy in fully networked systems.
