Peter Jonas

Biography

Peter Jonas was born 10.05.1961 in Darmstadt, Germany. He studied Human Medicine from 1980 - 1986 at the University of Giessen. In 1987, he obtained his MD degree with experimental work on the action of scorpion toxins on Na + channels in myelinated axons. From 1988 - 1989, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Physiological Institute of the University of Giessen. From 1990 to 1994, he worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, Heidelberg, Germany, in the Department of Cell Physiology, headed by the Nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Bert Sakmann. In 1992, he obtained his habilitation with experimental work on the molecular identification of native voltage-gated K + channels and glutamate-activated ionic channels with the patch-clamp technique. From June 1994 - March 1995, he was associate Professor at the Technical University of Munich at the Physiological Institute. Since April 1995, he is full professor and head of department at the Physiological Institute of the University of Freiburg. The University of Heidelberg, Biocenter Basel, University of California, Irvine, has been established in Freiburg ever since.

Research Interest

Peter Jonas is interested in the question of how synaptic properties form complex network functions, such as the encoding of information or learning.
