Biography
Jan D. Schmitto, MD, PhD, MBA, FCCP, FRCS (Glasg.) is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) and Cardiac Transplant Program at Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany. He is board certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery. After finishing medical school in Munster, Germany and Vienna, Austria, Dr. Schmitto completed his cardiothoracic-residency at University Hospital of Gottingen, Germany as one of the youngest cardiothoracic surgeons worldwide. He served as a Fellow in the Division of Cardiac Surgery, Brigham and Women´s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA and is presently working as an academic cardiothoracic surgeon at Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany where he also became the Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation Program.
Research Interest
Cardiac research has always been an integral component of Dr. Schmitto’s academic career - leading to a high number of scientific publications, including many first author papers and several book chapters. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for several international professional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery journals.
