Biography

Prof. Dr. Gerrit Schüürmann is a chemist and Head of the Department of Ecological Chemistry at the UFZ in Leipzig. He is spokesperson for the "Exposome" Integrated Project in the Helmholtz "Terrestrial Environment" programme. He is also Professor of Theoretical and Ecological Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. He is particularly interested in researching the safety of chemicals (REACH) and structure-activity relationships (QSAR) in order to predict the physical and chemical properties and potential toxicological effects of chemical compounds. Professor Schüürmann chairs the "Chemical Safety" committee of experts at the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker – the German Chemical Society (GDCh) – and the Gesellschaft für Toxikologie – German Society of Toxicology (GT) and is a member of the "Commission for Pesticides and Their Residues" at the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung – the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment – (BfR). Gerrit Schüürmann has chaired the panel of judges for the BundesUmweltWettbewerb, an environmental competition for children and young adults, for many years.
