Dr. Karin Frank
professor
Department of Ecological Modelling
Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research
Germany
Biography
Professor Frank is a mathematician and Head of the Department of Ecological Modelling at the UFZ in Leipzig and holds the chair in "Ecological Modelling" at the University of Osnabrück. She is spokesperson for the "EnergyLandUse" integrated project in the Helmholtz "Terrestrial Environment" research programme. The focus of her research work is on modelling the structures, dynamics, functions and properties of ecological, ecohydrological and socio-ecological systems under the influence of global change. Karin Frank is also very much involved in working with early career researchers within the framework of the UFZ's HIGRADE Graduate School and under the doctoral scholarship programme of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt – DBU). She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of SESYNC (US National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Centre).
Research Interest
Survival and spread of species and species communities under habitat loss, fragmentation and environmental fluctuations, with implications for biodiversity conservation
