Biography

Dr. Matthias Kästner is a microbiologist and a biotechnologist. He is the Head of the Department of Environmental Biotechnology at the UFZ in Leipzig and Professor of Microbiology at the University of Leipzig. The core area of his expertise is the analysis of microbial compound turnover in complex environmental systems targeting natural as well as technical systems and sites of anthropogenic impact such as contaminated sites and farmland and forest areas. He frequently provides reviews for the European Research Council (ERC, panel member), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Humboldt Foundation. In addition, he is a member of several editorial boards of international scientific journals, reviewer in several international joint research projects and a member of various scientific societies.

Research Interest

Bioremediation processes,Microbial degradation potentials and in situ activity Metabolic flow in environmental systems, C and N turnover in soil, genesis of soil organic matter, Chemical and microbial ecology in soils, sediments, and groundwater Isotope tools and tracer compounds
