Biography
Born 1967 in Cologne. He read musicology, history of art and linguistics at the Universities of Cologne and Giessen, M.A. 1991 with a thesis on Richard Strauss und die Sinfonie (Cologne: Verlag Dohr, 1994), Ph. D. with a dissertation on Die britische Sinfonie 1914–1945 (Köln: Verlag Dohr, 1995) which was awarded the Prize of the Offermann-Hergarten Foundation, Cologne. From 1993 to 1995 he was granted a scholarship by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes. In the Summer term of 1996 he taught at the University of Koblenz. From 1997 to 1998 he was Honorary Research Fellow of Birmingham University and was granted a research scholarship by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Since 1999 he is Research Assistant at the Max-Reger-Institut, Karlsruhe, and in this capacity responsible, amongst others, for Archive and Library, public relations, publications, the organisation of concerts, conferences and exhibitions; he held two seminars at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) (Aspects and problems of scholarly music editing, summer term 2001, and Problem area “First edition”, summer term 2002). Also he curator to the BrüderBuschArchiv (BuschBrothersArchive) and in this capacity conceived the new BrüderBuschGedenkstätte (Busch Brothers Memorial Place) which opened in February 2007. Since 2006 he is a co-opted committee member of the Freundeskreis der Busch-Brüder e.V. Apart from his activities in matters Regerian (from 2000 to 2010 he was also editor of the Mitteilungen of the Internationale Max-Reger-Gesellschaft e.V.), Jürgen Schaarwächter is European Contact of the Havergal Brian Society since 1998, German Representative of the British Music Society. Since 2001 he is editor of the periodical of the Robert Simpson Society and was in 2007 elected its chairman. Extensive international activities as a speaker, amongst others in Würzburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Detmold, Birmingham, Durham, Nottingham, London, Vienna and Berne.
