Ernst Günter Afting

Biography

Until his retirement, Günter Afting was President of the Munich-based National Research Center for Environment and Health (GSF), one of Germany’s biggest research centers. Prior to that he was president and CEO of Roussel Uclaf in Paris, a subsidiary of Hoechst AG and a 15,000-person pharmaceutical company specializing in anti-infectives, cardiovascular drugs, and steroids. Before that, he held various positions at Hoechst AG, including Member of the Board of Behring-Werke, Marburg, Head of world-wide Pharma Research, and Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Division (with 35.000 employees worldwide). Professor Afting holds degrees in medicine and chemistry ( M.D. Ph.D. ) of the University of Freiburg / Brg. and is a member emeritus of the medical faculty at the University of Goettingen. Professor Afting was a member of the Advisory Committee on Science and Technology to former Federal Chancellor Kohl as well as of the National Advisory Committee on Health to the State Secretaries of Science / Technology and Health. He presently serves on several supervisory boards of entrepreneurial biotechnology companies, including Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Boston, and Annikki, Graz (Austria). In addition, he is a scientific advisor to several pharmaceutical companies as well as to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology.
