Biography
Dr Falko Ueckerdt is a postdoctoral researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). He has a background in physics and economics and conducts research and policy advice in the field of climate change mitigation, energy system transformation, wind and solar power integration as well as economic impacts of climate change. Dr Ueckerdt is the scientific coordinator of the German part of a bilateral cooperation with Australia. The "Australian-German Energy Transition Hub" seeks to provide research on how to turn the challenge of a zero-emission future into an economic opportunity for both countries. Five research institutes from both countries cooperate as core partners: in Germany, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the Mercator Research Institute (MCC), the University of Münster (WWU); and in Australia the University of Melbourne (UoM) and the Australian National University (ANU). Dr Ueckerdt works in international projects with researchers from all over the world, including USA, China, India, Europe and Australia. In the CD-links project (http://www.cd-links.org/), 10 national modeling teams and 3 global modeling teams cooperate with the aim of deriving coherent national and global low-carbon development pathways (work package 3).
Research Interest
Falko Ueckerdt works on various aspects of climate change, in particular he contributes to answering the following questions: What role play renewable energy sources in climate mitigation scenarios? What are the major challenges of integrating wind and solar PV into power systems? What role play integration options (e.g. transmission grids, energy storage or demand-side management) in mitigating the integration costs? What are the economic damages induced by climate change? How do they compare to climate change mitigation costs?
