Biography
Prof. Hemmer (1963) has been Director of the Department of Neurology at the TUM-Klinikum rechts der Isar since 2007. He is a specialist in the field of neuroimmunology. The focus of his work is on the study of B cells and T cells in inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, in particular multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition, he examines genetic factors that are relevant for the development and therapy of MS. After studying human medicine, Prof. Hemmer promoted at the University of Freiburg in 1991. A DFG scholarship took him to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA in 1995. He received his specialist medical training at the university clinics in Freiburg and Marburg. As a senior physician, he worked in Marburg and as Deputy Clinic Director in Düsseldorf. Professor Hemmer has been Professor of Neurology at the TUM since 2007. He is the deputy spokesman for the disease-oriented competence network for multiple sclerosis and is a member of the board of the Medical Advisory Board of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society
