Johannes Barth
Professor
Physics
Technical University of Munich
Germany
Biography
The research activities of Prof. Barth (* 1962) concentrate on the fundamental understanding of phenomena at interfaces as well as the design of functional low-dimensional nanostructures. The focus is on the control of complex molecules and highly organized supramolecular architectures on the atomic scale. After studying physics at the LMU in Munich, Prof. Barth was a PhD in physics chemistry with Prof. G. Ertl at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin (1992). He then became an IBM Postdoctoral Fellow at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, USA. He deepened his work over a period of more than ten years at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, where he was also habilitated in 1999. Prior to his appointment as a professor at the TUM in 2006, he researched and taught at the Canada Research Chair at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, where he is currently nominated as Adjunct Professor.
