Volker Sieber
Professor
Science Center Weihenstephan for nutrition, land use and the
Technical University of Munich
Germany
Biography
The aim of the work of the chair of Prof. Sieber (1970) is to develop technical processes that make established basic materials for chemical production and fine chemicals economically from biomass as well as establish new relevant substances, which can be obtained from renewable resources , The focus is on chemical biotechnology. For this purpose, new biocatalysts (enzymes, cells or microorganisms) are developed using microbiological, molecular biology and biochemical methods and combined with chemical catalysts in cascade reactions. Prof. Sieber studied chemistry at the University of Bayreuth and at the University of Delaware. After graduation, he worked as a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology. After a short intermezzo at McKinsey & Co., Prof. Sieber worked in the chemical industry (Degussa, Süd-Chemie) from 2001 to 2008 in various positions. Since the end of 2008 Professor Sieber has been a professor at TUM. He also heads an institute section of the Fraunhofer IGB in Straubing, which he has been building since 2009.
