Gisa Gerold

Biography

Gisa Gerold graduated with a Diploma in Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Microbiology from the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany. She received her Ph.D. in Biology and Biochemistry in the laboratory of Professor Arturo Zychlinsky at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, Germany in 2008. During her doctoral studies she investigated the sensing of bacteria by the innate immune system. She then moved to the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C at the Rockefeller University, New York, where she investigated various aspects of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, among others the species tropism of HCV and HCV-related animal viruses. In February 2012, she joined TWINCORE and analysed the mechanistic details of HCV entry into hepatocytes using proteomics and virology techniques. Since 2017 she is heading the research group "Virus interaction proteomics" at the Institute for Experimental Virology at TWINCORE. Her group’s research is driven by the curiosity to understand how enveloped human pathogenic viruses such as HCV and Chikungunya virus gain access into human cells and how the innate immune system fights virus invasion. Using cutting edge technologies we strive to uncover basic principles of virus entry and cellular sensing of incoming viruses. Together with Pierre-Yves Lozach (University Clinic Heidelberg) Gisa Gerold organizes the annual “Cell Biology of Viral Infections” workshop of the German Society for Virology (GfV).
