Biography
Hans-Peter Blossfeld joined the European University Institute in 2012. He is on leave from his Chair in Sociology at the Faculty for Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration at the University of Bamberg, Germany, until 2017 Born in Munich (Germany) in 1954, he studied sociology, economics, social statistics and computer science at the University of Regensburg. He received his Doctorate in economics from the University of Mannheim (Dr. rer. pol., 1984), and his Habilitation in sociology from the Free University of Berlin (Venia Legendi, 1987). Hans-Peter Blossfeld worked as a Research Scientist at the University of Mannheim (1980-1984) and then as a Senior Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education in Berlin (1984-1992). 1988-1989 he was a Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Wassenaar (the Netherlands). 1989-1992 he held a Chair in Sociology and Political Sciences at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the European University Institute in Florence. After his return to Germany, he held a Chair in Social Statistics and Sociological Research Methods at the University of Bremen (1992- 1998) and a Chair in Theory and Empirical Analysis of Social Structures and Economic Systems at Bielefeld University (1998-2002). He directed the European Research Council (ERC) funded project ‘Education as a Lifelong Process – Comparing Educational Trajectories in Modern Societies’ (eduLIFE) (2011-2016) and together with Prof. Sabine Weinert he jointly coordinates the German Research Foundation (DFG) Priority Research Programme 1646. Blossfeld was President of the Society for Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies (SLLS) (2014-2016).
