Biography

Uwe Blien studied economics and sociology at the University of Regensburg, where he also earned his Sociology Diploma (1980) and his doctorate in economics (1986). After completing his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Regensburg and for the Institute for Labor Market and Professional Research (IAB). From 1988 to 1990, he was the deputy head of a department head for the Center for Surveys, Methods and Analyzes (ZUMA) in Mannheim. Since that time, he has been working for the IAB in Nuremberg, most recently in the position of a senior scientific director. In 1999, he received the habilitation and received the Venia Legendi for economics at the TU Kaiserslautern, where he was appointed as an apl. After coordinating the Regional Research Working Group at the IAB for several years, he took over the management of a work area at the IAB in November 2001. Today he is head of the research area "Regional Labor Markets" at the IAB. Since April 2009, he has also been a university professor for sociology, in particular labor market and regional research at the Otto-Friedrich-University in Bamberg. From 1996 to 2002 he was a member of the executive committee of the European Association of Labor Economists (EALE). From 2002 to 2014, he was a member of the "Councils" of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA), representing the German-speaking section "Society for Regional Research". From 2010 to 2014 he was president of this company.

Research Interest

His research interests include regional labor markets, impacts of applications of technical progress in economics and society, applications of economic and labor market policies, the econometric application of multi-level models, the effects of structural change, the development of East Asian economies and societies, and the development of social norms and institutions.
