Research Interest
The incidence of allergic diseases is steadily increasing, with 30-40% of the world's population now suffering from it. However, there are currently no effective treatment options, and very little is known about allergy prevention. The main birch pollen allergen Bet v 1 plays a particularly important role as - depending on the region - up to 98% of all pollen allergy sufferers are sensitized to this allergen. Furthermore, structurally very similar representatives are found in foods such as hazelnuts, carrots, celery, apples and stone fruit. After eating these foods, many birch pollen allergy suffer from so-called cross reactions based on the structural similarity of the food allergens to Bet v 1. Since the three-dimensional structure of the allergens is crucial for the allergic reaction, I am involved in my doctoral thesis, among other things, with the structure elucidation and stability analysis of allergens from the Bet v 1 family.
