Research Interest

A detailed corpus study shows that COME TO can be followed by nominal or by verbal elements. If followed by nominal elements, TO is the status of a preposition. If verbs follow, it is analyzed as a to-infinitive marker. This study investigates the occurrences of COME TO V as to a diachronic as well as a modern English point of view. The aim is to add new insight to the grammatical description of English. A detailed corpus-based investigation shows that COME TO follows either nouns or verbs. If nouns follow, then TO is analyzed as a preposition. Conversely, if verbs follow, TO is to be analyzed as a so-called to-infinitive marker. This research explores the occurrence of COME TO V in terms of function and importance. In addition to a diachronic analysis, a description in Modern English is in the foreground. The aim of this study is to provide a more detailed description of the grammar of English.
