Biography

Sylvia Danquah is a teaching assistant for New Media and also a past Organizing Secretary of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) Student Representative Council (SRC). She had her basic education at Nana Denkyiwah Preparatory school in Kete Krachi, Volta Region from there she went to Stars of Suhum Junior High School and then proceeded to Aburi Girls Senor High School where she obtained a certificate in General Art and had her Tertiary education at the Ghana Institute of Journalism where she offered Public Relations. Sylvia comes from a family of seven (7) of which is the third of five children. Cooking and travelling are her hobbies especially travelling because she is an adventurous person and also loves to explore to know everything this world has to offer. HER DAYS IN GIJ. For her love for politics, Sylvia added her voice to the student political administration. With this, she was the Yaa Asantewaa Hall Rep and GJA-GIJ Chapter Rep in 2013. She then became the Organizing Committee Member in 2014 and Organizing Secretary in 2015/2016 for GIJ SRC. She was also the acting Vice President for Yaa Asantewaa Hall in the year 2015 and then chaired the Organizing Committee in 2015\2016 and the Marketing Manager of Real Image Ghana (I LOVE GHANA CAMPAIGN) when she was in level 200B. In an interview with GIJ Online news, Sylvia aligned her greatest achievement to be the organization of the best ‘AKWAABA’ trip for the level 100s when she was the organizing secretary by then, “even though a lot of ‘AKWAABA’ trips were organized before my turner of office but mine was the best among all because a lot of students approached me to congratulate me” she added. Answering how she managed to win the SRC elections, she said “because of my popularity in school and how well I related to students, it gave me a lot of advantages where, I did not have to campaign massively to win the SRC elections because the students knew what I was capable of doing”. Outlining her challenges as a teaching assistant, she said “the students you are free with would want you to pass them and when you refuse some of them will start giving you attitude, but what I have always done is to give exactly the marks one has gotten and not to pay attention to what students want”. “The joy of every SHS student entering into the tertiary was one that filled my heart but when I came as a fresher, I was very disappointed because choosing GIJ over a school like the University of Ghana, Legon and meeting a school as small as GIJ was indeed disappointing but now GIJ has transformed significantly.
