Biography
Professor Bitar earned a B.S at Oklahoma State university (1977) and an M.Sc. in biochemistry (1979) and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology (1983) at University of Maryland in. He performed his postdoctoral training with Dr. Stanley I. Rappaport at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Currently, Dr. Bitar is a Professor of Pharmacology at Kuwait University, School of Medicine. Dr. Bitar has long experience in the field of oxygen radical biology, with special emphasis regarding the role of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in signaling derangement leading to various diabetic complications including cardiovascular diseases and delayed wound healing. Recently, he and his research group turned their efforts to the implementation of novel therapeutic strategies aimed at ameliorating the heightened state of oxidative stress and restoring the wound and endothelial responsiveness to various growth factors (IGF-1/VEGF) during the course of diabetes.
