Gregoriou

Professor
Department of Medicine
Athens
Greece

Biography

Dr Gregoriou received her Ph.D. from the University of Crete in Greece where she studied the brain circuits engaged in reaching movements and saccadic eye movements. She did her first post-doc at the University of Parma, in Italy working with Professors Massimo Matelli and Giuseppe Luppino to study the anatomic and functional organization of the inferior parietal lobule. In 2003, she moved to the United States where she worked in Dr Robert Desimone's lab at the National Institute of Mental Health at NIH, studying the neural mechanisms of selective attention by means of multiple electrode recordings. Dr Gregoriou moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with Dr Desimone in 2006 to continue her research on the neural mechanisms of attention as a postdoctoral associate at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. She joined the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Crete as a Lecturer in Physiology in 2009, where she currently holds an Assistant Professor position. She has also been a Collaborative Researcher at the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of the Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas (FO.R.T.H.) since 2009. Her current research focuses on the role of attention in visual processing and how it influences neuronal interactions between distant brain areas.

Research Interest

B.Sc. in Chemistry, University of Athens, 1994 M.Sc. in Neuroscience, University of Crete, 1997 PhD, University of Crete, 2001 Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Parma, 2001-2003 Research Fellow, Laboratory of Neuropsychology, NIMH, 2003-2006 Research Fellow, McGovern Instirute for Brain Research, MIT, 2006-2009 Lecturer of Physiology, University of Crete, 2008- Dr. Gregoriou has employed anatomical, imaging and electrophysiological techniques to study the anatomy and physiology of brain areas involved in visuomotor processing. She has co-authored 13 research papers, in high-profile refereed journals and has presented her work in numerous international scientific meetings. Her current research interests include the neural mechanisms of visual attention focusing on the role of feedback in attention. The techniques she employes include: 1) Simultaneous multi-electrode extracellular recordings from multiple areas, 2) permanent and reversible deactivation methods, 3) electrical micro-stimulation. Her research is currently being funded by the EU (Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant) and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (PLATON Joint Research and Technology Programme between Greece and France).
