Biography
Aristidis S. Charonis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1952. He graduated from Varvakion High School and attended the Medical School of the University of Athens, where he received his M.D. degree in 1976. He received his Ph.D. in Cell Biology in 1982 from the University of California San Francisco. He did postdoctoral work at Yale University Medical School and from 1987 till 1998 he was a faculty member (Assistant and Associate Professor with tenure) at the Department of Pathology, University of Minnesota Medical School. From 1995 till 2002 he was an Associate Professor of Histology at the University of Patras Medical School. From 2002 he is a Chief Researcher at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. He is also involved in the effort to coordinate biobanking in Greece and to connect the Greek biobanks with the European network, being recently built as a major modern infrastructure.
Research Interest
his scientific interest includes the patho-physiology of pancreatic beta cells. Using proteomic approaches, he has identified that ERp46, a protein compnent of the endoplasmic reticulum, is involved in diabetic conditions and he is exploring its role in insulin production.
