Biography

He was born in Athens in 1932. He studied Biology (Zoology, Comparative Anatomy and Botany) and Chemistry at the University of Lausanne (1950-1954) and Sorbonne Genetics (1954-1955). In 1955 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Athens, and during 1958-1960 he worked as a scholar at the Columbia University in New York as a scholar of the American government. From 1961 to 1993 he taught as a professor of genetics at the Athens University of Agriculture (Agricultural University), where he was the first director of the Genetics Laboratory. Since 1993 he has taught History and Philosophy of Biology at the University of Athens, where he left as a peer in 2001. He taught as an elected professor of evolutionary biology of the species at the University of Paris VI and Population Biology as a visiting professor at Harvard, she has participated in biology and genetics conferences and editorial committees of scientific journals. He was a member of the Basil Institute of Agricultural Sciences (from which he was honored with the agricultural medal in 1963) and is honorary Professor of Genetics at the Agricultural University and Honorary Doctor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2003) and of the Democritus University of Thrace (2009). He was the Dean of the Athens School of Agriculture (1974-1975), member of the Steering Committee and Vice Chairman of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (1975-1978), President of the National Center for Marine Research (1985-1990), Vice-President of the Commission Internationale pour l'Exploration Scientifique de la Mediterranee (1985-1990), and the Board of Directors. of the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, member of the American Society for the Study of Evolution, founding member of the European Society of Evolutionary Biology, member and president of the Greek Zoological Society. In addition to his 125 scientific publications, the main independent works are: Genetics (Athens 1968), - Population Genetics Problems (Athens 1979, with M.
