Biography

Basic education was in field of chemistry, subfield chemistry of biologically active substances with further specialisation in synthesis and characterisation of sorbents for isolation of biologically active substances (enzymes, sterols) (1974 – 1979 at University of Latvia). PhD studies were done at University of Latvia jointly with Moscow University (Russia) finalised with PhD (doctoral candidate) thesis defended at Moscow University in 1985 on synthesis and characterisation of biospecific (affinity) sorbents. From 1983 until 1989 I worked at Institute of Applied Chemistry of USSR Academy of Sciences at first as scientific researcher but from 1985 as head of laboratory on sorbents, microcarriers of cell cultures. From 1989 until 1992 I was head of aquatic chemistry group at Institute of Biology with tasks to coordinate environmental monitoring programs and do analysis of water pollution. From 1992 I started to work at University of Latvia at newly established Department of Environmental Science at beginning as docent, but after habilitation (degree Dr.habil.chem.) in 1995 as professor. From 1997 till 2006 I was acting as Dean of faculty, but since 2007 as head of Department of Environmental Science.
