Biography
Charalambos (Babis) Savakis, M.D. Ph.D. is Professor of Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Crete, and President & Scientific Director of the Biomedical Research Center "Alexander Fleming" in Athens, Greece. He received his MD from the University of Athens and a PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge, he joined the University of Crete Medical School and, until 2008, the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas (IMBB-FoRTH) at Heraklion, Crete. A member of EMBO, he has served as Chairman of the Biology and Biotechnology Committee of the Greek National Research and Technology Council, Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive of the National Organization for Medicines (EOF) and Chairman of the EMBL Council. He is currently member of the European Nucleotide Archive Scientific Advisory Board and of the International INSDC Advisory Committee.
