Biography
Antonis I. Sakellarios received his BSc degree in the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies of University of Ioannina from 2006. He has a Phd in Biomedical Engineering from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of University of Ioannina. His thesis title is “Mathematical Modeling of the development of the atherosclerotic plaque”. The objective of the research is to develop and validate a model for atherosclerotic plaque formation. The model is based on the interaction of blood flow with the arterial wall. The mass transfer from the blood flow to the artery wall is studied counting mechanical, biochemical, biological factors and gene expression. Lipid accumulation, inflammation and plaque growth are the major mechanisms which are modelled in his research. He is also a research assistant at the Unit of Medical Technology and Intelligent Information Systems at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Ioannina and the FORTH - Biomedical and Research Institute.
