Biography

Nicholas G Kounis was born in Patras-Greece and graduated, first of all medical students, from Athens University Medical School after five and a half years (the course normally lasts six years). He served his compulsory army service for two years as lieutenant and following this, he served his compulsory medical service in urban Greek area for three years. Afterwards, he moved to United Kingdom and worked for ten years in salaried posts as house officer, senior house officer, registrar, clinical tutor and senior registrar, initially in medicine and afterwards in cardiology. Following his work abroad he returned back to Greece where he worked as consultant cardiologist in Patras University Medical School for ten years and afterwards as Professor of Medicine in Patras Highest Institute of Education and Technology until now. During his career he has served as reviewer for more than 70 peer reviewed medical journals and he has authored more than two hundred scientific papers in English medical literature between them three clinical pioneered medical descriptions: Iliacus Hematoma Syndrome, Cardiopathia Fantastica and is the founder of Kounis Syndrome. Kounis syndrome is considered, today, as nature’s own experiment and magnificent natural paradigm showing novel way how to recognize and prevent acute coronary syndromes.  

Research Interest

Inflammatory mediators, released during acute allergic episodes and induce acute coronary events, are increased in blood or urine of patients suffering from acute coronary syndromes of non-allergic aetiology, then drugs that stabilize mast cell membrane, protect mast cell surface and inhibit mast cell maturation could emerge as novel therapeutic modalities capable of preventing acute coronary and cerebrovascular events.
