Biography
Constantine Stephanou has studied law and international relations at the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International Studies. In 1980 he earned a Doctoral Degree in Law with distinction from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 1999 he is Full Professor at the Department of International and European Studies of Panteion University, holder of the 1st Jean Monnet Chair in European Law & Institutions. From 1999 to 2007 he served as Director of the Master’s Program in International and European Studies at the same department and from 2007 to 2009 as Director of the Institute of International Relations, affiliated with Panteion University. He is the founding Director of the European Centre of Economic & Financial Law established in 2010 (www.ecefil.eu). He has also served as visiting professor / teaching associate at French universities (Nice, Grenoble, Bordeaux, Paris II), as well as the Universities of Utah, Madrid (Alcala de Henares), the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and currently at the European Institute of the University of Geneva (IEUG). He has participated as external referee for the assessment of numerous theses in foreign universities and for the appointment of a Professor of European Law at EUI, Florence. As a practising lawyer he has served with SIFIDA in Geneva (1973-74) and the Bank of Crete (1975-81). He has also served as Vice-President of the Commercial Bank of Greece (1996-2000) and since 2001 in various positions at the Hellenic Banks Association (HBA) and is currently a member of its legal council. He has also acted as adviser to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the four Greek presidencies of the Council and the five Intergovernmental Conferences (IGCs) for the revision of the founding treaties.
