Biography
Dr. Curt Machida received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 1982, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Vollum Institute (OHSU), prior to obtaining a faculty appointment at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) in 1988. After 14 years at the ONPRC, Dr. Machida joined the OHSU School of Dentistry and became a tenured professor of Integrative Biosciences with an adjunct appointment in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Machida has published over 120 manuscripts, book chapters, and abstracts, and serves on the editorial board of several international journals, including the Journal of Endodontics, Molecular Biotechnology, and Oral Biology and Dentistry. Dr. Machida currently teaches biochemistry and molecular biology to the first-year dental students, serves as the Course Director for the year-long Integrative Biosciences series, and sponsors dental students and residents in research. Dr. Machida’s major research focus has centered on understanding the factors affecting the genetic diversity and potential selection of strains of mutans streptococci following caries restorative therapy in children. A secondary research focus is placed on the oral microbiome and understanding the implications and impact of microbial homeostasis and imbalance on oral health and disease.
