Vyzoviti Sophia

Department of ARCHITECTURE
University of Thessaly
Greece

Biography

Sophia Vyzoviti received her PhD in design methodology as a Greek state scholar at Delft University of Technology, Design Knowledge Systems, where she developed a design tool conditioning the emergence potential of public spaces. In this approach, the appropriation of urban spaces by distinct groups was investigated through empirical research resulting to models of representation, explanation and prescription. Prior to TUDelft, she completed her Master in Architecture at the Berlage Institute after earning a diploma in Architecture from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has taught architectural design at University of Cyprus, National University of Singapore and Delft University of Technology.  She actively engages in numerous workshops both as instructor and critic and lectures worldwide. Her research focuses on design tool development, exploring how form generation processes mediate between social groups and artefacts to transform conditions of spatial interaction. Vyzoviti’s goal is to enhance community cohesion through collective creativity employing design principles from an interdisciplinary field between architecture, urban sociology, anthropology, and artificial intelligence. Areas of application include architectural and urban design, as well as interiors and installations. Sophia Vyzoviti is the author of three books on form-generating experiments in architecture and design: soft shells, supersurfaces and the best selling folding architecture released by BIS Publishers Amsterdam. She has published extensively in Greek and presented papers at international conferences. She is founding partner of matrix_g.sea a cross-disciplinary architecture collaborative that promotes and sustains the design as research approach. Her work has been exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia, Architectural Biennale Rotterdam, NOUS collaborative, The Archive and a plethora of exhibitions in Greece. She has co-curated international architectural exhibition synathroisis. She has received distinctions in architectural design competitions including a first prize in EUROPAN 5, and a runner up in UIA ‘Renewable energy sources and bioclimatic architecture for shells to shelter people affected by natural disasters’.
