Biography
David Hieber has devoted his career to exploring carotenoids and their expanding role in medicine. His expertise on carotenoid biology covers many facets such as investigating the role of carotenoids in human health and disease, researching the function of xanthophylls carotenoids in plant photoprotection, and understanding the biosynthesis pathways of carotenoids in plants and algae. Dr. Hieber joined Cardax in 2006 as a Senior Scientist where his work has focused on examining the molecular mechanisms of carotenoids at a cellular level. Prior to joining Cardax he was a Senior Researcher at Kuehnle AgroSystems. Dr. Hieber has an M.Sc.(Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Auckland (New Zealand) in 1994. He subsequently joined the University of Hawaii and received the benefit of dual training under experts at both the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii regarding researching the significance of carotenoid action and gap junction intracellular communication, and at the Department of Plant Molecular Physiology in discovering the photoprotective role of xanthophylls carotenoids in plants. Dr. Hieber has multiple GenBank submissions and his work has been published in numerous journals.
