Biography

Dr. Gang Li received his MBBS degree from The 4th Military Medical University, Xian, China (1985-1991), and served as a military surgeon in Beijing 301 Hospital (1991-1993) before he moved to England in 1993. He graduated from University of Oxford Medical School (1997) with a D.Phil. degree on studies of biological mechanisms of distraction osteogenesis. After post-doctoral training at the Medical Research Council Bone Research Laboratory in The University of Oxford, he took up a lectureship (1998), Senior Lectureship (2001) and Readership (2004) in the School of Medicine, Queen's University Belfast, Belfast, United Kingdom. Dr. Li is currently a full Professor at The Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2009-). He also serves as Deputy chief of Stem Cells and Regeneration Program, School of Biomedical Sciences, CUHK and Deputy Director of Space Medicine Laboratory, CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute. His main research interests are on biological mechanisms of distraction osteogenesis, fracture healing, musculoskeletal tissue regeneration, stem cell biology and gene therapy. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, 10 book chapters, and edited 3 books. His work has been cited for more than 3000 times with a H-index of 25; he has been invited to give keynote lectures, seminars on stem cells biology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine in USA, Japan, Australia, Russia, Europe, China, Taiwan, etc for numerous occasions. He serves as Life member and General secretary (2013-) of International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society; Honorary Treasurer of British Orthopaedic Research Society (2004-2006); Member of Program Committee of American Orthopaedic Research Society (2006-2007) and a Member of Editorial Board, Calcified Tissue International (2004-) and Associated Editor, Journal of Orthopaedic Translation (2013-). He currently serves as the general secretary of Limb Reconstruction Society, Chinese Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons; council member of Chinese Orthopaedic Research Society, Chinese Medical Association; council member of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society, Chinese Association of Biomedical Engineering. He is an active member of ASBMR, ORS, ISCT and ICMRS. Dr. Li also holds honorary Professorship at China Medical University, Shenyang; Shanxi Medical University; South-East University, Nanjing; The Fourth Military Medical University, Xian; Guang Dong Medical College. Research Interest

Circulating mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) biology, homing and recruitment mechanisms; Novel genes control stem cell differentiation and migration; Stem cell gene therapy (the use of MSCs as anti-cancer vehicles); Tissue engineering for musculoskeletal tissues (fracture repair, tendon disorder, distraction osteogenesis and cartilage repair).
