Biography
"Professor Francis K. L. Chan, JP, is the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, the Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He is a member of the Board of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Professor Chan graduated with honours in CUHK in 1988. After completion of his postgraduate training as a Croucher Foundation research fellow in Canada, he joined his alma mater in 1997as a lecturer. Since then, he has risen through the ranks to become Professor of Medicine, the Director of the Institute of Digestive Disease, and honorary consultant physician in 2005. An outstanding teacher, he received the Faculty's Teacher of the Year Award for 5 consecutive years and twice the Vice-Chancellor's Exemplary Teaching Award. As an internationally renowned clinician-scientist in peptic ulcer bleeding, helicobacter pylori, endoscopic therapy, and colorectal cancer, Professor Chan has published over 400 full scientific articles in high impact international journals and his h-index is 78. His contributions to medical research have been recognized worldwide with many national and international awards such as The David Y. Graham Lecturer (The American College of Gastroenterology 2005); The State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (National Office for Science and Technology Awards, PRC, 2007); Sir David Todd Lecturer (Hong Kong College of Physicians 2007); Andy Martynoga Memorial Lecturer 2008; Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship 2007-08; High Impact Research Paper Award (2008-2010); JGHF Marshall and Warren Lecturer 2011; Science and Technology Award (Ministry of Education, PRC, 2011) and Professor Richard Yu Lecturer 2012. Professor Chan is the first scholar in China to be selected by The Lancet to exemplify his academic profile. In recognition of his outstanding academic achievement, he received the degree of Doctor of Science from CUHK in December 2011. Besides serving the medical and academic profession, he also actively participates in community service. During the SARS outbreak, Professor Chan organized a large-scale screening test to detect silent SARS infection for over 12,000 Hong Kong citizens. In recognition of his contributions to the society, he received the honour of the Justice of Peace in 2010."
