Biography
Deepak is from a rare breed of Pro Entrepreneurs. He has had an impressive career spanning over 42 years in sales, marketing and general management of which 28 years have been spent in the general management. A Veteran of the wine and spirits industry, Deepak Roy is currently the Executive Vice-Chairman & CEO of Allied Blenders & Distillers Pvt. Ltd. which is the third largest spirits company in India. Some of the most successful brands -Officer?s Choice, Bagpiper Whisky, McDowell?s No. 1 in the liquor industry bear his indelible stamp. Deepak?s illustrious career spanning over 42 years comprises of stints in leading Multi-National Companies like Glaxo, Ranbaxy, CPC, Warner Hindustan, The UB Group and Diageo plc. In 1993 as the Founding CEO of Diageo?s India business (formerly „International Distillers India? prior to the merger that created Diageo), delivered profitable growth since its inception. In his last position held with Diageo, as President, South Asia, Russia & Baltics of Guinness UDV (a Diageo company), based in Mumbai, he managed a team that included 35 expats. He has a proven track record in developing and implementing effective marketing strategies that have built both mass and premium drinks business in India and other emerging markets. He is also the man behind the successful launch of the Smirnoff brand in India, and is known to have built other successful brands in India, China and Russia. Deepak?s foray into entrepreneurship came about in 2002 when he led the management buy-out of Diageo?s Gilbey?s brand and unfolded them into Triumph Distillers & Vintners, a company which he promoted. Subsequently in 2005, he sold his business to the UB group creating in the process considerable value. Later in 2007, Deepak co-promoted a wine company and launched premium wines under the brand name „Zampa?. Subsequently, he merged the company with Grover Wines and now the combined entity Grover Zampa is the second largest wine company in India. Deepak continues to be the promoter and director at Grover Zampa. In October 2007, Mr. Kishore Chhabria, Chairman of Allied Blenders & Distillers Pvt. Ltd. (ABD) invited Deepak Roy to lead the company offering him 5% stake in the company. Deepak took over as the Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of the company, today, ABD is the largest domestic Spirits company and its brand “Officer?s Choice” is the world?s largest selling whisky and 16th most valuable spirits brand in the world. Deepak Roy holds a Diploma in Management Science from the Japan-America Institute of Management Science, University of Hawaii, U.S.A. and has a Bachelor?s Degree in Economics (Hons.) from Delhi University. During his working career, Deepak has been sponsored to various development programmes including the „Advance Marketing Management Programme? in Harvard Business School, U.S.A. While in school and college, Deepak was a sportsman of National repute.
