Biography
This is cancer specialty hospital and is situated at Adyar in Chennai. Cancer Institute was started on June 18, 1954 and was founded by Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy. She was the first woman in India to graduate in medicine – 1912 and was the first Indian member in Women's India Association (WIA), Madras (1918) and was its President for 30 years. In 1922, Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy discovered her sister had cancer, after her death she proposed to build a cancer hospital in Madras and formed a Cancer Relief Fund in 1949 and with the support of the WIA; she established the Cancer Institute WIA on the land donated by Mr. S.K.Puniyakoti Mudaliar. The Institute also houses a hospital, a research centre, a centre of preventive oncology, and a College of Oncology Sciences (a postgraduate college that conducts super-speciality courses in surgical oncology, medical oncology, oncological nursing, Medical Physics and Psycho-oncology). Its centre for preventive oncology has been working in union with non-government organisations and government hospitals to carry out cancer screening camps and Pap smear tests at the district level and in various parts of the city. The Institute's cancer clinic, which is the first in the country, is also studying the genetic factors related to the disease. A satellite cancer care centre of the Adyar Cancer Institute is located at Pallikaranai, which was inaugurated on February 12, 2011
