Biography

 Dr Rakesh Kumar Chadda is currently Professor of Psychiatry, AIIMS, New Delhi. Dr Chadda finished his MD in psychiatry from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Chandigarh in June 1985. He is a Past President, Indian Association for Social Psychiatry and Indian Psychiatric Society, North Zone; and Secretary General, Indian Association for Social Psychiatry. He is a Distinguished International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of UK and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) Dr Chadda has more than 175 publications to his credit including 4 books. Dr Chadda has worked in areas of somatisation, caregiver burden in severe mental disorders, Dhat syndrome, help seeking behaviour and psychiatric rehabilitation. His research work has been published in reputed international journals like the British Journal of Psychiatry, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Journal of Psychosomatic Research, International Journal of Social Psychiatry, Comprehensive Psychiatry, International Journal of Rehabilitation Research, Lancet, Social Psychiatry & Psychiatric Epidemiology, General Hospital Psychiatry, Nordic Journal of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Research. Dr Chadda has been a recipient of 11 national awards in psychiatry including ICMR’s Tilak Venkoba Rao Award, NAMS’s Dr Vimla Virmani Award and Indian Psychiatric Society’s DLN Murthy Rao Oration.    

Research Interest

   Development of pharmacogenomics SNP database for critical candidate genes involved in drug response in schizophrenia – Multicentric study, funded by DBT, Principal investigator at AIIMS Centre, 2008-2010.   2.                   Multicentre study on prevalence and phenomenology of functional somatic symptoms in Depression by the Indian Psychiatric Society - Multicentre study on prevalence and phenomenology of functional somatic symptoms in Depression, 2010-11   3.                   Intra-genic variation of Candidate genes in Depression and Suicide ideation: Association Study in Indian Population. Funded by Department of Science and Technology 2013-15, Principal Investigator, AIIMS Centre   4.                   Need Assessment Survey about Consultation Liaison Psychiatry amongst the Clinical Faculty Members at AIIMS, New Delhi, 2015-16.
