Biography

Dr. Krishnakumar Menon graduated with an M. Sc. in Biochemistry from M. S. University of Baroda, India, and also with an M. Sc. (Prelim, Monash)/Ph D on a scholarship from National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Australia equivalent to commonwealth research grant from La Trobe University, Australia. He then went on to do his post-doctoral training on a JSPS fellowship at the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Japan, and University of Connecticut Health Center, USA. Subsequently, he joined as a staff scientist at the University of Iowa, USA, and Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories at Monash University, Australia, before joining the faculty at Amrita Centre for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine. He is also a reviewer of grants and PhD thesis from overseas. Dr. Menon was also an invited scientist to National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Japan. Some of his publications are cited extensively in the field of myelin biology. Dr. Menon's interest is focused on the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis affecting the central nervous system (CNS),that afflicts young adults leading to paralysis. As the disease doesn’t have any cure, and with an annual economic burden of more than 2 billion dollars, it is important to identify the disease at an early stageso that better treatment can be provided. On this front, Dr Menon and his colleagues developed a clinical proteomics approach for the identification of biomarkers that has potential in diagnostics and therapy. Dr. Menon also has international collaborations with Monash University, Australia, through ASRF program for developing nano-based therapy for modulating the immune response in multiple sclerosis. Dr. Menon’s work also focuses on identifying biomarkers of clinical significance in CNS leukemia. The laboratory is oriented towards developing diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic biomarkers that has clinical significance.
