Biography

Dr. Narayanankutty Karuppath comes with a rich experience of 35 years working in various prestigious national and international institutions. He received his B. Sc. (physics) from the University of Madras in 1976 and his M. Sc. (Physics) from Sardar Patel University in 1978. His academic career started as being a research scholar at the departments of physics & BHU-IT of Banares Hindu University working on X-ray crystallography where he was recipient of UGC senior research fellowship. He was directly offered a scientific post at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (a premier institute, Under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India), Bangalore by the then Director, Prof. Dr. J. C. Bhattacharaya. Engaging himself in research activities in observational astronomy and astronomical image processing, he served at the Vainu Bappu Observatory of IIA (Asia’s biggest one) for one and half decades including, in his capacity as its officer-in-charge. He was also a part of the team for setting up the high altitude observatory at Leh, Ladakh in Himalayas. He developed several software packages for image processing and data analysis and was also instrumental in the discovery of the 3-day rotation period of comet Swift-Tuttle.
