Biography

Dr. Rajiv I. Modi joined the Board of Directors of Cadila Laboratories in 1991. In 1995, he restructured the company and rechristened it as Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited. Upon assuming the leadership of Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Modi charted a multi-pronged approach for its corporate growth. Envisioning a global presence for the group, Dr. Modi played a pivotal role in establishing marketing set-up and subsidiaries of company across the shores. Today, Cadila Pharmaceuticals has a strong global presence with operations in the USA, Japan, CIS, and Africa, with an overseas formulations manufacturing unit at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The company has alliances with leading companies and manufacturers across the globe, and uses global best practices and world-class technologies in its operations. Cadila Pharmaceuticals places immense focus on research. Being a Biotechnologist himself, Dr. Modi has played a major role in developing the company’s Biotechnology Division into a strong Research and Development unit, focusing on new developments and breakthrough innovations. Dr. Modi actively participates in proactive development of the state of Gujarat. As part of the ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit, he led the industrial delegation from the state to Japan in 2009, seeking to strengthen business ties between the two countries. Consequently, Japan became the partner-country in Vibrant Gujarat. Nominated to the Steering Committee of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Modi was also the Chairman of CII Gujarat State Council. He presently Chairs the CII National Committee on Pharma for the year 2015-16. He is also Chairman of Board of Governance of prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, India. Dr. Modi is a member of The New York Academy of Sciences, USA; Genetic Society of America; American Society for Microbiology; Industrial Biotechnology Task Force, New Delhi; Technical Panel on Biotechnology, Gujarat; Indian Chemical Engineer, India and TIFAC. He has also been elected as Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, New Delhi – an elite academy with prominent industry leaders, academicians and scientists amongst its Fellows. A Ph.D. in Biological Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA Dr. Modi also holds an M.Sc. in Biochemical Engineering from University College, London and a B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, India.
