Biography
SHAHNAZ BASHIR's widely reviewed and critically lauded debut novel The Half Mother (Hachette, 2014) won the Muse India Young Writer Award 2015. His short fiction, memoir essays, poetry and reportage have been anthologised or published in A Clutch of Indian Masterpieces: Extraordinary Short Stories from the 19th Century to the Present (Aleph Book Company, 2014); Of Occupation and Resistance–Writings from Kashmir (Tranquebar, Westland, 2013); Growing Up Kashmiri (HarperCollins, India [forthcoming]), Caravan, Himal Southasian, Fountain Ink, Kindle, the Punch Magazine, Kashmir Lit besides many others. He teaches narrative journalism and conflict reporting at the Central University of Kashmir, Srinagar. He has a Certificate of Merit and university gold medalist in journalism and was also awarded the Shamim Ahmad Shamim Memorial Kashmir Times Award 2007 for excelling in media studies. Kashmir Life, in its special Jan 2016 year-ender issue, declared Shahnaz as "one of the nine impact-makers from the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir". His second book Scattered Souls (HarperCollins, 2016), a collection of interlinked stories, was awarded The Citizen's Talent of the Year Award 2016-2017. He is currently working on his third book.
