Deepak Nayyar

Biography

Deepak Nayyar is the Chairman of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. He is the Emeritus Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and was, until recently, Distinguished University Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research, New York. He is an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Schwarz Centre for Economic Policy Analysis, New School for Social Research, New York. He is Chairman of the Sameeksha Trust, which publishes Economic and Political Weekly. And he is Vice Chairman of the South Centre, Geneva. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the World Institute for Development Economics Research, UNU-WIDER, Helsinki from 2001 to 2008 and as Vice President of the International Association of Universities, Paris, from 2004 to 2008. He was on the Board of Directors of the Social Science Research Council in the United States from 2001 to 2007 and was Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Department of International Development, Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford, from 2004 to 2007. He has received the VKRV Rao award for his contribution to research in Economics. He has been President of the Indian Economic Association. He is also on the Editorial Board of several professional journals.

Research Interest

His research interests are primarily in the areas of international economics, macroeconomics and development economics. He has published papers and books on a wide range of subjects, including trade policies, industrialization strategies, macroeconomic stabilization, structural adjustment, economic liberalization, trade theory, macro policies, international migration, the multilateral trading system, and the world economy. In addition, he has written extensively on economic development in India.
