Mihirkanti Chaudhuri

Biography

Dr. MihirKanti Chaudhuri is Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University. He is well-known for his outstanding and significantly useful contributions in the field of inorganic chemistry viz. In the areas of fluoro and peroxo chemistry of metals, non-metals, acetylacetonato-metals, inorganic mass spectrometry, newer reagents and protocols, applied inorganics, and ‘Green Chemistry’. Prof. Chaudhuri did M. Sc.-Inorganic Chemistry from Kalyani University, Ph. D. from IIT, Kharagpur and DFG Post-doctoral in Organometallic Chemistry from Ruhr University, Germany. Prof. Chaudhuri joined as Scientific Pool Officer in North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong in 1976 and became a Reader in 1979. He continued there till 1996 as HOD, Dept. of Chemistry. He joined IIT Guwahati in 1996 as Head, Dept. of Chemistry. He also carried out duties as Dean, Students’ Affairs and Dean, Research and Development before leaving IIT in 2009. He was also actively involved in building up of a New Department of the then newly established University (NEHU, Shillong from 1976 onwards). He was also nominee of the President of India to the Boards of Management of Several universities/institutes. He was a committee member of Alexender von Humboldt Foundation, Germany for 'Exchange of Scientists and Advancement of Knowledge'. He has 116 Research Publications in referred Journals and 4 patents to his credit. He has Supervised 19 Ph.Ds. Prof. Chaudhuri has been a panelist and member of various bodies. These include Chemistry Experts Panel Member of Union Public Service Commission since 1982, Experts Panel Member of Chemistry and Pollution Control under Ministry of Environment and Forests since 1985, Member of Extra Mural Research Committees of CSIR, New Delhi since 1987, Member of Chemistry Panel of University Grants Commission, Member of the Advisory Committee of CSIR, New Delhi on SSB and YS Awards since 1991, Member of the Research Council of Human Resources Development Group (HRDG), CSIR, New Delhi, Member of the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC), DST, Govt. of India, Member of the Editorial Board of Proceedings of Indian Academy of Sciences - Chemical Sciences, since 1993, Member of the PAC - Inorganic Chemistry of the DST, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, since 1991, Member of several UGC - Committees including COSIST and Special Assistance Programe, since 1992-93 Prof. Chaudhuri has received many awards and fellowships which include Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, West Germany in the year 1973, Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc) in the year 1988, Shantiswarup Bhatnagar Award in Chemical Science in the year 1989, Fellow of the National Science Academy (FNA) in the year 1991 Professor P. Natarajan Endowment Award in the year 1998, Chemito Award in the year 2002, S. S. Sandhu Award from Indian Chemical Society in the year 2005.
