Research Interest
The elemental chemistry of marine sediments and the work involves the solid state speciation of elements in coastal and deep-sea deposits. This work is directed towards an understanding of the processes, which control the chemistry of oceanic deposits. The main aspect of this work is an assessment of the inorganic and organic reactions that control diagenetic changes within the sedimentary column. Research is also concerned with the transport and fate of organic matter within the oceanic system. The aim is to understand its role in the biogeochemical processes and its interaction with trace and major elements. The work on marine pollution studies are concerned largely with the effects of organic contaminants (e.g. PAH) in the marine environment. Environmental impact studies are focused on water quality issues in order to understand the industrial/anthropogenic disturbance of natural cycles in the coastal environments. The work on green house gases (e.g. Nitrous oxide) in the coastal environment of India is to understand the hypoxic condition prevailing in the Arabian sea and its impact in the coastal region.
