Biography
Mr. D. Bhattacharya is Vice Chairman and Non Executive Director, Hindalco Industries Ltd., a global non-ferrous metals major. He is also the Vice-Chairman of Novelis (Hindalco’s wholly-owned Global subsidiary), which is the world’s largest player in the rolled Aluminium products.Mr. Bhattacharya joined the Aditya Birla Group in 1998 as Managing Director of Indo Gulf Corporation, after a 30-year long career in Unilever, where he held various senior level positions across its global operations. He led the Chemicals business of Unilever in India before moving to the Aditya Birla Group. He became Managing Director of Hindalco in the year 2003.Under his leadership, Hindalco has transformed itself from a single location, India-centric, commodity Aluminium producer to a global, non-ferrous Metals major, with presence across 5 continents and 13 countries. Mr. Bhattacharya led the acquisition of Novelis in 2007, one of the largest acquisitions by an Indian company. During the Global Financial crisis, amidst economic meltdown and bouts of volatility; Novelis, witnessed a spectacular turn around. The inorganic growth approach and post-merger integration received critical acclaims and has also featured in Harvard Business Review article as “Best Practices”.Hindalco’s revenue has tripled in size under the leadership of Mr. Bhattacharya to US$ 16 bn at a CAGR of about 40%. This growth has not only been profitable but has also transformed Hindalco to its today’s balanced portfolio with a thrust on world-class, value added businesses. The company earned the prestigious Forbes Asia ‘Fabulous 50’ Award in the year 2010. In the last five years, Hindalco has implemented an ambitious expansion programme, setting up three large Greenfield projects in India and doubling its aluminium operations.Mr. Bhattacharya has also been the guiding force behind numerous CSR activities carried out by Hindalco and its affiliates; and also leads the energy conservation and carbon footprint reduction initiatives. As a renowned industry leader, he is also the Director of the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) and is a member of the Industrial Advisory Council for the State of Madhya Pradesh in India.He has completed his B. Tech (Hons.) in Chemical Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur and B. Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata. IIT Kharagpur conferred upon him the “Distinguished Alumnus Award – 2012” on the occasion of the Institute’s Diamond Jubilee completing Foundation Day.
