Supercritical fluid extraction of a variety of natural products is being studied with the aim of elucidating the role of co-solvents and added surfactants. Also, a theoretical model of supercritical fluid-based cleaning process is being constructed. The model highlights specific contributions of various parameters such as contaminant-particle size, fluid velocity, processing temperatures and pressures etc. The use of fuzzy logic-based techniques provides an effective approach to many types of problems related to chemical process safety. Studies on two classes of such problems are underway: pre-emptive fault diagnosis and cost-benefit analysis (using fuzzy decision models) of process-safety related investments Both experimental measurements and theoretical prediction of adsorbed amounts of polyelectrolytes at air-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces are being carried out. Comparison of such results with adsorbed amounts at solid-liquid interfaces is expected to provide insight on the conformational aspects of the adsorbed polymer at different types of interfaces.
