Research Interest

Research on iron & Steel Processing: Alternative routes of iron making using RHF: Utilization of iron ore and coal fines of Indian origin in rotary hearth furnace could be an energy efficient process under optimized design and operating parameters. One of the major research interests of the author is towards selecting those parameters based on rigorous experiments in laboratory scale RHF and process models and subsequently scale it up to pilot scale. The author has demonstrated the significant effect of the shapes of pre-fabricated iron ore coal composite pellet on the iron nugget formation at RHF. Attempts is being made to enhance the heat and mass conductance of the thicker bed by tailoring size, shape distribution of pellets, additives etc using SDF, Ministry of Steel sponsored project. Optimization of cored wire injection parameters for clean steel production: Calcium injection in steel melt is done for removal of undesirable inclusions and its modification for producing clean steel. Calcium recovery and its optimum usage during cored wire injection in steel melt has been estimated based on plant data, dimensional analysis, and SEM, EDS analysis, and mathematical model. It has been demonstrated that significant amount of wire could be saved while operating wire injection at optimum speed at Tata Steel & Vizag steel. Presently the author is working in collaboration with WMG, UK towards three dimensional characterization of inclusions and its evolution. Welding Research: The author has been instrumental as one of the PIs in developing an indigenous Electron Beam Welding setup at IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with BARC & BRNS. Developing indigenous data base for joining of dissimilar metals using electron beam oscillation is one of the major research areas presently. The author has worked intensely with the research group at Pennsylvania State University, to develop an indigenous CFD code for fusion welding for steels, which is capable of predicting velocity, temperature, thermal cycle and solidification parameters in three dimensional space.
