Biography
Hewish measured, for the first time, the ionospheric winds, the height of ionospheric irregularities of density, using scintillation methods; developed the theory of diffraction by an irregular phase screen; discovered the interplanetary scintillation and applied it, for thefirst time, to measure the speed of radar wind outside the ecliptic plane; developed the interplanetary shocks and corotating streams; he has also designed and constructed the cambridge IPS array and implemented the sky survey for high angular resolution studies of radio galaxies and quasars. He is known for the discovery of pulsars during the above sky survey and exploitation of the interstellar scintillation of pulsars to study the spectrum of turbulence in the interstellar plasma.
