Biography

Avinash Narayan Bhisey obtained his BSc (1956) and MSc (1958) in Zoology from the University of Bombay and joined the Indian Cancer Research Centre (1959) on a Fellowship from the Government of Maharashtra to work for PhD under the supervision of Dr (Mrs) Kamal J Ranadive. In 1962, he was awarded a Fellowship by the 'Wellcome Trust', London, to work with Professor EJ Ambrose, at the Chester Beatty Research Institute in London for six months, where he learnt the techniques of time lapse cinematography and interference microscopy, and studied cell-cell interactions among human tumor cells. After returning to India, he established facilities for time-lapse cinematography at the ICRC, continued studies on genetic instability in tumor cell populations and was awarded PhD (1966) by the University of Bombay. He worked at the Institute for Medical Sciences, Tokyo, with Professor Hajim Katsuta on normal hepatocyte culture, and also carried out post-doctoral research at the Institute for Cancer Research, Fox Chase, Philadelphia, USA, in the Cell Genetics laboratory of Dr Jerome J Freed (1968-70). He was the Head, Cell Biology Division (1985) and appointed as Director, Cancer Research Institute (CRI) and Tata Memorial Centre (1995). Later, he was given the responsibility of coordinating the construction of and commissioning the Advance Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) as its Project Director. After retirement (2001) he was appointed as a Consultant, Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune.
