Biography
Birendra Bijoy Biswas obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from Calcutta University, after which he joined Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (1952) and worked as a Research Assistant for a while and was inducted as a lecturer in the Deptartment of Botany. In 1954, he joined Bose Institute, Kolkata and completed his PhD from Calcutta University under the guidance of Dr SK Roy (1957). He went to USA for postdoctoral studies, first in University of Texas, Austin for a year, in the laboratory of Professor Jack Myers and then University of Pittsburgh under Professor Richard Abrams where he discovered the RNA polymerase involved in the process of transcription and methylation of RNA (1961). Biswas received DSc (hc) from Burdwan University, West Bengal in 2001.
