Biography
Professor Cohen-Tannoudji has made important, pioneering and long lasting contributions in the field of laser atom interactions and laser manipulation of atoms and molecules. He predicted and observed the 'light shifts'during his Ph.D. He developed, with his students and collaborators, the dressed atom approach for describing atom-photon interaction. During the last decade he made several seminal and decisive contributions to laser cooling trapping, including Sisyphus cooling, gravitational cavities for neutral atoms and quantisation of atomic motion and localization of atoms in periodic optical potential wells. He has been awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics in recognition of these discoveries.
